The S & S Hinge Company is now located just forty-five minutes west of downtown Chicago in Bloomingdale, Illinois.
S & S Machine
Works, the forerunner of
S & S Hinge, began manufacturing continuous and butt
type hinges in 1932 in Chicago. Hinges were manufactured
for ammunition boxes, C-ration containers and military
equipment containers during World War II for the U.S.
Army.
In 1948, Walter
Stevenson separated the hinge stamping operation
from S & S Machine Works and built a 10,000
sq. ft. facility at 4727 W. Iowa Street in Chicago,
creating the S & S Hinge Company. After serving in
the United States Army, Walter’s son,
Al Stevenson, became a senior manager. S &
S Hinge soon outgrew the Iowa Street facility and
built a 20,000 sq. ft. facility
in Schiller Park, Illinois, moving in 1959.
In 1983, Chris
Stevenson, Al’s son, joined the company and is now the president
and chief executive officer of S&S Hinge Company. Under his direction, the company has streamlined its production consistent with Lean Manufacturing principles.
